I've been doing lots of research recently about Stratocasters and beefing them up. I found out about single coil humbuckers, namely, Seymour Duncan Hot Rails -> http://parsl.com/6B74 or Cool Rails -> http://parsl.com/D2F5

Does anyone have any experience with these or any other single coil humbuckers.

How do they sound compared to regular humbuckers?

How would one or two of these get along with the bridge humbucker in a HSS Strat?

Thanks :)

no personal experience with Hot Rails, but I do use his pickups on a lap steel.
I have heard many raves about the Hotrails.
I think they would fatten up a strat just fine.
it would be difficult to compare to the same standard when a humbucker is side by side.
they really are two different things.

I've used them all and they do add punchiness to the single-coil spot, and they don't hum. They are not as full or powerful as a true humbucker, but they do a good job in a single-coil spot.

You might also want to try the little '59 - I like that pup better than the rails.

I've got a guitar (Godin LGX3) that came stock with 3 Duncan Duckbuckers (the older model since this is an older guitar). Those are single coil sized humbuckers that replicate the single coil sound with the reduced noise of a humbucker. These have none of the humbucker sound if that is what you are looking for.

I have a lap steel that came with an EMG Select Strat type pickup that's a "twin rails" type of mini-humbucker in a Strat form factor. Comparing it with a typical Strat single coil pickup, it was quite hot but had very poor treble response. Strong bass and midrange, nothing on the top end. I couldn't stand it in the lap steel. I took it out and put in a lipstick pickup, which I like a lot better.

I put a split rail humbucker in the neck position of a Tele. Sounds good enough. It was a GFS. I've not really cranked it up for the full effect, but I've been able to get good tones from it at lower volumes.

Thanks for the feedback! I was thinking about getting a Fender Strat HSS and replacing either the neck or both singles with a Seymour Duncan rails. I'd REALLY like to be able to hear it before I try it though. I will have to talk to someone next time I make it to the guitar store.
