I am interested in getting a mini/headphone amp.

It's down to 2 choices, and I'd like to hear what the people think.

1) Dean Stack in a Box

2) Smokey mini-amp

Does anyone have them? What are your thoughts and suggestions?

If you are talking about the $30 or so dollar little amps, they basically all sound bad, I've played several brands...I mean, that's not really the point of them though, it's just a fun little thing to have that you can clip on your belt and bring around easily...just for fun.

they are both $30 amps. I don't care if they sound great. I only want it to play late at night when everyone's asleep. And I want to be ultra-portable just for fun.

The Dean one seems more suitable for the headphones...but i can easily plug headphones into the smokey. I just want to find the one that sounds "the best" even if it sounds bad. it makes sense to me...lol.

doesn't muesenfruend have a smokey? did i imagine that?

If all you want is headphones then how about something like the Korg Pandora? I've got the old model (Pandora PX3) that I picked up for cheap on eBay. A lot of the effects are somewhat cheesy but it will drive headphones, has a tuner, metronome (plus rhythm patterns) and it's about the size of a deck of cards. The newer (and maybe better) PX4 has been out for a while so you might even get that on the cheap.

If you don't mind spending a little more, get the lowest cost modeler with a headphone jack. I've got an RP 300a that I use with headphones (no amp involved) and I have tons of effects I can use at the click of a pedal and when you do want to use an amp you have the ability of making alot more noise. You'll get more bang for the buck in my opinion.

Dean Icon PZ
Line 6 Variax 700
Dean 79 ML (silverBurst) Dean 79 ML Arctic White
Dean V-Wing Dove
Wampler SuperPlextortion - Skreddy Lunar Module
Peavey Transtube 110 EFX - Vox DA20 - Valve Jr Head/Cab
Phonic 620 Power Pod PA
Line 6 Pod HD
H2O Chorus/Echo

I own the Dean stack in a box, and it has some alright sounds to it. It isn't the best sound your ever going to get but for portability it works just fine. If I just want to practice some simple stuff i'll take it with me to work.

I've heard good things about the Smokey's and I would probably go with one of those if its going to be one of your main practicing amps.

+1 for the modelers. I have an RP300A that was given to me, and I love it. Don't use it so much through the amp, but it's great for headphones
