After reading Shady Harrison's post about "Playing Those Songs Which Have An Emotional Resonance", I thought it would be interesting to start a thread about songs that have played an important role in your emotional lives (not that you've necessarily played or performed, but those that stand out for one reason or another that you attach an emotional value to. Not necessarily sadness ... what really pee'd you off, what made you ecstatically happy, when you fell in love, when you fell out of love, important things for one reason or another, and what song did you play for days and weeks and months every time you thought about it?

I'll start off, if you like.

The anthem to my second divorce was Phil Collins' "I Don't Care Anymore". Everytime I would feel myself start to cry, or when the soon-to-be-ex did something really stupid and I needed to scream (like sending me a greeting card that said "Ah, Divorce.... The next best thing to axe murder." [which really screwed him in court, btw]), I would put that album on at full blast and listen to Collins beat those drums (and I was "air drumming" right along with him), then I would sing the entire thing with him at the top of my lungs over and over and over again until I was over my rage. I sang it so many times one day I completely lost my voice and couldn't speak at all for nearly a week. (But I could still "air drum" and sing and scream in my head!) The important thing is .... the song kept me from buying an axe.

:D

So, what's the story behind one of your "Soundtrack of Your Life" songs?

One of mine would have to be "Benny and the Jets" by Elton John from the 70's movie "Aloha Bobby And Rose"
Ahhh the 70's at the movies with my first SERIOUS girlfriend that became "our" song.
Even today when I hear it, it makes me smile and takes me back to those days...
Love it.
Keith

I know a little bit about a lot of things, but not a lot about anything...
Looking for people to jam with in Sydney Oz.......

You Spin Me Right Round - Dead Or Alive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCiVXigrjjQ

This was a favourite cheese track for myself and a couple of guy friends. If it came on somewhere it was mandatory for us to dance in pure campfest manner, no matter how sober, depressed, busy chatting someone up, or anything else we were. For a while at uni I worked in a bar where this was on the jukebox, and it became our "last orders" song there too (with friends also dancing along and me dancing-while-cleaning-up). Always brings a smile to my face.

Bob Dylan's Visions of Johanna and Miles Davis' Kind of Blue are both perfect albums for later-night when it's pitch black and you've switched the lights off. Anytime I'm having a tough day or week, my soul yearns for these, it's like my musical chill-pill. Perfect. I would also use KoB for it's "official function" but would have to be with a very chill guy I already know well. I wouldn't want to ruin my enjoyment of that record by association if things went wrong during playtime.

Korn - Freak On A Leash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9Fg8bwGYxI

I remember when this came out. I was totally into Munky for about 6 months. I thought he was just cooler than kewel.   And the whole CotKorn album became something of a big thing with various friends. We thought it just sounded so exciting. I listened to it yesterday and thought it sounded, for the most part, crappy. Still, it made me smile to remember back.

Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOU8GIRUd_g

When I first heard this, my thoughts were " wow this guy's got a great voice. Shame about all the other sounds." I guess I had excellent taste even at four years old. 8)

I have just completely ruined any semblance of credibility I might have previously had with that one post, haven't I?

Yes
You have lost any semblance of my respect . . . regarding your taste in music.

(just kidding)

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.

Well, not anything recent but when I was a young man and was distressed over a certain relationship gone south I found comfort in this BOC song.

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
I've been living on the edge so long
Where the winds of limbo roar
And I'm young enough to look at
And far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside
I'm not sure that there's anything left to me

Don't let these shakes go on
It's time we had a break from it
It's time we had some leave
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating up our brains
Oh please don't let these shakes go on

You ask me why I'm weary, why I can't speak to you
You blame me for my silence say It's time I changed and grew
But the war's still going on, dear, and there's no end that I know
And I can't say if we're ever...
I can't say if were ever gonna be free

Don't let these shakes go on
It's time we had a break from it
It's time we had some leave
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating out our brains
Oh please don't let these shakes go on

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
My energy's spent at last
And my armor is destroyed
I have used up all my weapons and I'm helpless and bereaved
Wounds are all I'm made of
Did I hear you say that this is victory?

Don't let these shakes go on
It's time we had a break from it
Send me to the rear
Where the tides of madness swell
And been sliding into hell
Oh please don't let these shakes go on
Don't let these shakes go on
Don't let these shakes go on

I suppose this sort of thing is one of the many reasons people write songs. :? Oh, and this song made me buy an axe ... 1st Gibson Les Paul

"Work hard, rock hard, eat hard, sleep hard,
grow big, wear glasses if you need 'em."

The first 3 albums that introduced me to rock music were The Beatles' White Album, CCR's Chronicle and Pink Floyr's DSOFTM. A friend whose parents had a state-of-the-art HiFi system (way back in the late 70s) played these albums for me over and over again - I still remember vividly the beginning of Back in the USSR on that system.

Later as a teenager, Pink Floyd's The Wall resonated deeply with me - it still does now but on a different level.

two anthems, both by the T-Heads:

Once in a Lifetime puts it in perspective for me.

Life During Wartime is pretty much what goes on inside my head, tho very few people would suspect or believe it.

and just for grins: we did an impromptu performance of LDW at last weekend's Riverside Jam 2009 in Middletown, OH ...

Seeing as I sort of inspired this thread, here's my contribution. There are many songs I like, but the one song I have taken to thinking "Thank G-d that song exists!" in recent times is a Jim Croce track- "Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)". It brings comfort over a loss to which I am unlikely to gain closure any time soon. (Good friend, through death, in contrast to the song itself, which seems to speak of loss through the disintegration of a loving relationship.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5NwG6klB60&feature=related

Operator, well could you help me place this call?
See, the number on the matchbook is old and faded
She's living in L. A. with my best old ex-friend Ray
A guy she said she knew well and sometimes hated

Isn't that the way they say it goes?
Well, let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell 'em I'm fine and to show
I've overcome the blow, I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
That it just wasn't real
But that's not the way it feels

Operator, could you help me place this call?
Well, I can't read the number that you just gave me
There's something in my eyes, you know it happens every time
I think about a love that I thought would save me

Isn't that the way they say it goes?
Well, let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell 'em I'm fine and to show
I've overcome the blow, I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
That it just wasn't real
But that's not the way it feels

Operator, let's forget about this call
You see there's no one there I really wanted to talk to
Thank you for your time, ah, you've been so much more than kind
And you can keep the dime

Isn't that the way they say it goes?
Well, let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell 'em I'm fine and to show
I've overcome the blow, I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
That it just wasn't real
But that's not the way it feels

Take care,

Casey

Some years ago my wife and I when through a rough patch in are relationship
and separated for a time.

The song Tell The Truth by Jude Cole really meant a lot to me at that time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAR_V9-ui5c&feature=related

It seemed expressed my feelings at the time.

Glad to say we choose the "start it over" option

nothing in the rock genre came come any where close for me.
the song that brings me to my knees, softens my spine, reminds me of my broken heart is
Ella Fitzgerald singing 'the Nearness of You'.
going in the way back machine and looking at my early twenties it was Neil Young's first two or three albums that
got to me. the song 'Harvest Moon' is beautiful, but it also reminds me of the heart problem.

Wind Beneath My Wings . I had never heard the song before , somehow , when it was played at the funeral of a co-worker who was well-liked by everybody in the company . It still gives me shivers when I hear it played and it reminds me of him . Rest In Peace Bob .

If I claim to be a wise man , it surely means that I don't know .
