Hi ,

There is going to be a wedding in my family.Woo Hoo !

Its of my cousin sister and is scheduled to be around mid of May.

Now being the person with a guitar who wants to show his talents to hundreds of people who are going to turn up at the function i am searching for some good songs especially meant for wedding occasions and the like.

I have no knowledge about these songs so i would want you to recommend some of the popular yet easily strummable or fingerpicked songs (which i can sing , if the song is not in my key which is usually E or Am i can certainly transpose it myself.)That maybe too much of an asking but i am sure such songs do exist.

And don't hesitate to mention any difficult ones either.I might be more good than i sometimes think i am 8)

Seems like the season of wedding has arrived.YEAH :P

Rahul,

How exciting! Last summer my sister got married and we had a lot of fun picking out music (not for me to perform, but for the singer). My sister and her husband like country music, so we stayed close to that genre.

What type of music fits your guitar-playing and singing skills, and maybe most importantly, what type of music does the BRIDE prefer? (Sexist as it may be, a wedding is often considered the "Bride's Day")

Will you perform during the actual ceremony, or perhaps before the wedding, or maybe after the wedding at a reception/party? If you will play during the actual ceremony, the bridal couple may want to choose songs which have personal meaning to their life together.

Will you play acoustic or electric, or maybe some of each?

How formal will the occasion be?

Are you thinking classical, country, folk, pop, rock, sacred, big band, other?

The answers to some of the above questions might help people make appropriate suggestions.

Here where I am the "Chicken Cluck Song" is a hilarious dance which is traditionally performed at many wedding receptions after the party has gotten going. Definitely NOT a "church" song!

Rahul,

Just thought of something else. If this wedding is going to be held in a church/synagogue/temple, etc, and you will be playing there, be sure to check with them. Some faiths don't allow secular music to be played within.

I apologize if I'm telling you things you already know. I don't mean to be a know-it-all. I just get excited about choosing wedding music.

Two songs I personally like for wedding music are Dan Fogelberg's "Longer", and Chicago's "You're the Inspiration". They are both older but pretty timeless. You could probably find them on the internet.

Infact i am going to see the songs you have mentioned and when i googled wedding songs...WOW what a spate of information !

I am trying to see what can be good or excellent for that occasion.

I feel even 'imagine' by john lennon can be good.I want to create a surfed up , heaven like feeling in the place...

If that's being too dreamy , its just that i want to settle a nice atmosphere by my singing and guitar (solo only).

I will keep trying. :D

How about a great little rocker,

"You Never Can Tell" by Chuck Berry, Great lyrics, its all about a wedding.

I'll paste it in to this post!

Here it is:

C G G7

C
It was a teenage wedding, and the old folks wished them well,
G
you could see that Pierre did truly love the mademoiselle,
G
and now the young monsieur and madame have rung the chapel bell,
G7 C G
"C'est la vie", say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell.

C
They furnished off an apartment with a two room Roebuck sale,
G
the coolerator was crammed with TV dinners and ginger ale,
G
but when Pierre found work, the little money comin' worked out well,
G7 C G
"C'est la vie", say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell.

C
They had a hi-fi phono, oh boy, did they let it blast,
G
seven hundred little records, all rock, rhythm and jazz,
G
but when the sun went down, the rapid tempo of the music fell,
G7 C G
"C'est la vie", say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell.

C
They bought a souped-up jitney, 'twas a cherry red '53,
G
they drove it down to Orleans to celebrate the anniversary,
G
it was there where Pierre was married to the lovely mademoiselle,
G7 C G
"C'est la vie", say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell.

They had a teenage wedding, and the old folks wished them well,
G
you could see that Pierre did truly love the mademoiselle,

and now the young monsieur and madame have rung the chapel bell,

Best regards,

Chris

Rahul,

Another very sweet song used at weddings is "From this Moment", I think by Shania Twain and Bryan Adams. Very dreamy, especially for a slow, romantic dance.

Above all, I suggest asking the bride in advance for final approval of the music you choose. Many brides want to "design" the day of her dreams, and they can get fairly emotional about it. Just giving my input from a woman's viewpoint. (I was a bride many years ago, and haven't forgotten how it felt.) :D

Given that it's a wedding and you play classical guitar, pachabel's cannon would be my choice.

Guitarin' isn't a job, so don't make it one.

I don't think you could go wrong with "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers - just don't get confused with their other huge hit, and play "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by mistake.....

:D :D :D

Yeah, it's a good thing. :) Since music has always been important to me, choosing the music was a big thing. I enjoyed planning the details, but the day of, was able to just have fun and not worry 'bout a thing! Still hitched 17 years later, and to the same guy!

I agree that Pachalbel's (I can't spell it) Canon is gorgeous! Also Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach?) is beautiful.

Anne Murray's "Could I have this dance for the rest of my life" is usually pretty popular.

I wanted to learn to play guitar really badly and I think that I have succeeded.

When my youngest brother got married, I teamed up with his bride's cousin - a professional cellist - and we did the Bach/Gounod version of Ave Maria during the ceremony. It's a great piece... tough to play on one guitar because of the timing (though it can be done), but an easy piece if you have a second instrument or singer carrying the upper line - then the rest is just arpeggios.
