Laura and I went to see Rory Block at a new venue called the Flash in Kennett Square PA. Rory plays acoustic blues from the old school. In addition to several originals, she played many songs from Robert Johnson and Son Touch. Between each song, she told a story about how these originators worked together and influenced each other. Her voice was in good form, and her aggressive playing was accurate and creative.
Although she had 4 nearly identical Martins at hand, she played one almost exclusively, and changed tunings before most songs. She even taught us all how to find a likely open tuning for an old song. It was an amusing tale, but the part left unsaid was "First you start with over 40 years of playing guitar for a living..."
A great solo show, and I encourage you to see her if she's nearby. Her husband said that he's put 200,000 miles on the bus in 3 years, so she should be in your neighborhood soon!
Rory is AWESOME! I haven't seen her live in quite a while but she
does play in this area quite a bit.
I think she lives over in Woodstock NY which isn't that far from us.
I'll have to keep my eyes out for a show.
