I want to sing with a low larynx, but I'm accustomed to depressing my larynx using the root of my tongue and extrinsic muscles (anti-constrictors). Is there a way to fix it, if so what should I do? Thanks, Jason!

This strikes me as a very technical question that can only be addressed by a voice teacher. You're suggesting, if I understand correctly, that your attempts to lower the larynx cause your throat/tongue to tense up--is that correct?

If so, my only suggestion (beyond getting thyself to a voice teacher) is doing stretching excercizes--head/neck yoga, as it were. Roll your tongue around your mouth to stretch it out, then rest it behind or on top of your front teeth when you sing. Roll your head around a bit for good measure. Try to keep entirely loose from the chest up.

But, again, this kind of question needs to be answered by someone who really knows what he's doing--i.e., not me!

Good luck,
Jersey Jack

Can I ask why you want to sing with a low larynx? I just wonder as if you are trying to get a more pure or 'open throat' sound there are other factors involved as well as a low larynx
