When my son saw my first lapsteel guitar I built, he wanted one. So I decided to kick it up a notch for him. This lapsteel is a lot deeper, about 3" deep. The neck and body are hollowed out (Weissenbourne ish). The bulk of the guitar is clear pine with a 3/4" mahogany top. The fretboard is alternating pieces of purpleheart and maple. I designed a top loading string thru style of tailpiece (guitar too deep for regular string thru) out of the very hard durable purpleheart. The bridge and nut are made of a purpleheart base and a metal strip for the strings to lay on. So far I'm using a humbucker p/u but will eventually exchange for a P-90.
It sounds a little 'airier' compared to my solid body lapsteel.
not an expensive build.
cheers
Cool guitar, great job! :) Any chance of hearing how it sounds?
If you want a P90 in it let me recommend Duncan's PhatCat - it will fit the humbucker sized pickup ring and is less noisy than regular P90s because of the metal housing. I have a PhatCat in my Rodeo lap steel and love it so much that I'll probably replace all my humbuckers with them.

very nice. I like your solutions for bridge and string retainer.
I am half way finished with my hollowbody/electric lap steel.
I have been documenting its progress. once done I too will post.
