why would a guitarist want to alter the tuning of his guitar?

To open up a whole new musical world! Eventually you're going to run across a song that is using an alternate tuning and you're really going to want to play it as written, but you'll never get there with the standard EADGBE tuning. The blues uses quite a few alternate (usually "open" tunings), and there's a whole section of tunings known as "Joni" tunings. Joni Mitchell was really good at coming up with her very own tunings. I highly recommend experimenting with as many alternates as you possibly can! A whole new world will open up, I promise!

yes i did notice a few of the bands i like used a alternate tunning i was just curious as to why. thanks for the reply!

True! I heard one guy that refused to change the tuning of his guitar because he said it wouldn't still be a guitar. Stubborn, but true...seems to be working well for him though :lol:
