I just read Matt's article on Slide Guitaring (?) and was thinking about getting a slide... what type to you recommend???
Some related discussion in this thread:

I got the chromed Craftsman and it's good but heavy - you need heavy strings if you use it. (13s at the very minimum, IMHO.) Has a very nice tone.
I also picked up a Mudslide on ebay for $3; it's lighter weight but seems somewhat darker/warmer toned to me. Even with this one, I think 12-gauge strings are too light, and will be switching to 13s. Not sure my guitar could handle heavier strings than that.

Here's a couple of suggestions:
Diamond Bottlenecks, by many considered to be the best glass bottlenecks around, and Sir Ramic Slides,- very cool ceramic bottlenecks.
Steinar
I will second Steinar's recommendation for Diamond - their lead crystal slide is truly beautiful (I only wish my slide playing - and I use that term quite loosely - was of the same standard as the slide!
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

I use the biggest thickest Jim Dunlop slide they sell. Is good for me.

that's the one I use also 8) I use a Craftsman 13/16 spark plug socket for my lap steel( I also use it for my lawn mower and rototiller once a year  )
Thanks for the commendations Steinar & Greybeard - much appreciated  Here's a great thread to try for all the 'slide-a-holics' out there who have a desire to collect all things slide-shaped! A big thanks must go to my good friend & fellow slide collector Barry Weber of N.Y.C. for collating this list

My own personal recommendations? For sweet, smooth & tunefull slide........a wine bottleneck:
For graunch, loud & 'balls-to-the-wall' slide....a Craftsman socket wrench!

I think that biggest, thickest Dunlop, in brass, is the #224. I've got one of those and an 11/16" six-point Craftsman deep socket here right now.

Those 'comb' shaped ones; has anyone tried those? I mean, besides Tsar? I see them from time to time on eBay.
Worth getting?

Actually, you know what? Dumb question. I'll just get one someday and give it a try. Flitz it up if it's rusty. Nothing like first hand experience :)
I have a bag full of these that I'm going to check out:
James Musser, who makes them, wanted me to give them a shot and sent me a whole lot in various sizes and lengths some months ago. Feel a bit guilty about that, but my head has been so into finishing my CD that I competely forgot about them. Will check them out one of these days.....
His website is here if anybody's curious...

Comb shaped slides? I've missed something...

OK. That's definitely a lap slide. There are all sorts of things one can slide with, of course.

Yah, those are the ones. They look a little 'crusty' though, nothing Flitz couldn't take care of. Or this other stuff I heard about, Mother's something or other, for motorcycle parts and chrome.
Hey, maybe a nice heavy Zippo lighter - the longer ones obviously, but that might be close. I think I'll try one of those Shubb-Pearse ones too or maybe a 7/8" bullet; the 3/4" keeps slipping out of my fingers even though I like the weight and length. The 7/8"s I've seen are all 3" long or more. The 3/4"s are the ones that are under 3".
Of course I 'could' probably just practice more and get used to the 3/4", lol.
