The title for this one comes from an H.P. Lovecraft story where the narrator wakes up and witnesses this bizarre parade marching down his street. That's really the only link to the story. I recommend Lovecraft to everyone anyway though. There's also a pretty blatant T.S. Eliot reference in there... maybe I was feeling literary today?
"The Festival"
I heard the music out my window
It woke me from a peaceful sleep
A line of people stretched for miles
Single file
Headed down towards the beach
Some were singing, some were laughing
Some they never made a sound
And when they finally reached the water
And went under
No one even slowed down
And they sang...
This is the way the world ends...
This is the way the world ends...
This is the way the world ends...
And I searched each of their faces
Then all the sudden there you were
You said something like "I'm sorry"
Well maybe
I guess I'll never know for sure
When I watched you hit the water
I sorta half waved goodbye
Then with a stupid smile on my face
I took my place
There at the end of the line
And we sang...
This is the way the world ends...
This is the way the world ends...
This is the way the world ends...

Well Marv,
Perhaps it wasn't meant to do so, but The Festival made me smile. Well written . . . . . . and a wonderful image.

Hi Marv
Good to see that you're still very much around and writing. Like Chefie this made me smile. I think it's a good story told very simply through the use of the parade.
Literally Great stuff
Bob
