A little late on this one and my apologies for that. Been a little more hectic than I'd care for thing to be of late.

Anyway, I'm hearing this as a gospel call and response sort of thing (and a thank you to Jerboa for putting me in that particular frame of musical mind  ) with a chorale or very small choir singing the title lines (in parenthesis) and chorus. Could be a big choir, I suppose...

Everything's Going To Be Alright

Hush little darling don't you cry
(everything's going to be alright)
Daddy's going to sing you a lullabye
(everything's going to be alright)
When the fridge is empty and the floors are cold
(everything's going to be alright)
When there's nothing to have and no one to hold
(everything's going to be alright)
When the night is falling and you have no friends
(everything's going to be alright)
When you're sure the dawn's never coming again
(everything's going to be alright)

That's the way it is babe don't know why
Don't matter how good you are
Don't matter how hard you may try
(everything's going to be alright)
(everything's going to be alright)
That's the way it is babe and all you can do
Is hope that someday some way someone is going to love you

And then everything's going to be alright
Everything's going to be alright
Everything's going to be alright
Everything's going to be alright

Hush little darling don't you cry
(everything's going to be alright)
Listen to some more of your Daddy's lies
(everything's going to be alright)
When your mind's in pieces and your heart's the same
(everything's going to be alright)
When you'd give up heaven just to hear your name
(everything's going to be alright)
When all your hopes and dreams are gone
(everything's going to be alright)
When you have no smile and you have no song
(everything's going to be alright)

That's the way it is babe don't know why
Don't matter how good you are
Don't matter how hard you may try
(everything's going to be alright)
(everything's going to be alright)
That's the way it is babe and all you can do
Is know that someday some way somebody's going to love you

And then everything's going to be alright
Everything's going to be alright
Everything's going to be alright
Everything's going to be alright
Everything's going to be alright
Everything's going to be alright

Peace

Hi David,

Wow! Really like this one. Soft words, big impressions.

Thank you both for the kudos. This is, to me at least, very "throw together" and I'm not very happy with it yet. Part of that is that I've not had much chance to sing it and see how it works as a lyric. There are some lines I like, but there are also some that while good (or at least good enough to survive the first two edits) still leave me thinking there might be better choices out there. The narrator is very erratic, going from nice specific images (such as fridge and floors) to vague yet impressionable ones. The last four lines of each of the verses, in particular, truly seem weak when compared to the first part of the verses. And it seems to me that each image should get stronger as the song progresses, helping it to build the contrast between "everything's going to be alright" and "everything's really messed up, isn't it?"

Bottom line is that I've got my work cut out for me here. But I've also got this written down at least, so I've a place to start. And I didn't have that a week ago when the assignment came up, so I guess phase one is going well.

Thanks again and I'll be seeing you on the boards. I've got to make up for lost time this week as I sat out on critiquing for all of Week 2, except for one song (Drunkrock's I think) at the very beginning. Shame on me!

Peace

Hi David,
Yes i liked it too. I think I see what you mean about losing the specifics but I dont think it makes the lines any weaker.

My perverse mind did pick out the line:
Is hope that someday some way someone is going to love you - and added the unsaid bit - cos I sure dont!

I guess I was expecting the Dad to reassure the daughter that even now she is loved. As in
Is hope someday someone will love you as much as I do

But that is nitpicking really . . . :)

Cheers
Ola

i think you're right about having the image get more concrete as it goes alon in each verse...
