I don't have anything written for this but I thought I'd post an idea that I had for a song and if anyone wants to help write a collective song, then cool! I got this idea while observing a co-workers bag sitting on her desk at work. It was a large tote bag, overstuffed and I began to imagine that she leads a very full life. So my song idea is to describe people by their pocketbooks and what they carry inside of them. The idea sort of reminds me of the song, Ladies Of The Canyon" by Joni MItchell.

So whats inside your head tonight
Is it all your thoughts of your life
Are you that busy or is it just a mask
Or has life become a arduous task ..

All your thoughts are written down
You never smile , you always frown
So what are the thoughts you've written down
Is your heart broken , and laying on the ground

I read your post Pearl and this is what I came up with ....

Its probably just another one of those things that will end up in my book for "Another day "

Its yours if it helps any ...

Trev...

Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am

I have an idea for your topic. I wrote down a first verse that kind of introduces the theme of being able to tell what someone is like by the things she carries with her. The idea I had was to put out this first verse and then let others chime in and pick something that might be in the bag and describe what it tells about her. Unfortuntely, I wrote this down on a legal pad at work which I don't have with me at the moment, so I'll have to post the verse tomorrow.

I had a plan to post an idea nyself- I went back through the earlier topics from the year, since I'm a new member to this particular group. I saw the one about cowboys and writing about one who might be somewher besides in the West. However, I took the idea and wound up producing an entire lyric, so that kind of nixed the collaboration angle on that one. But yours is a very interesting topic and seems to lend itself quite well to collaboration.

Till tomorrow.....

Regards,

Mike

As promised, here is the first verse for the song idea about knowing someone from what she carries with her.

Hhe kept her world inside a bag she carroed on her shoulder
A ptpourri of items, small and larger; new and older
Some are dear and some forgotten
But if ever she had lost one
Then a page to her life story would be gone

I wasn't really satisfied with that last line but it's the best i have been able to come up with so far. Feel free to make suggetstions if anyone has a better line.

Now my thought was this. Each person can pick a specific item that the girl might have in the bag, and then write a verse about it- describe the item, when/how it got there, what its meaning is, and most importantly, what the item tells about the protagonist.

We get three or four people to do this and- voila!- we have a song.

If anybody is game, we can see what we come up with.

Regards,

Mike

The faded pictures in her purse
People she once knew
The old flame, she once thought
"I'll end up back with you."

('Scuse me, thought I'd chuck that out.)

Take care,

Casey

The mirror she uses
To re-touch the make-up,
Hiding the lines
Of a hundred break-ups.....

(I was trying to think - what WOULD a woman have in her handbag/purse? And the first thing that sprang to mind was a mirror........)

Oh and Slipperman, I like your last line - it's sort of three/four meanings in one, if you think about it....

:D :D :D

Love that one, Vic. That bit about the "lines of a hundred breakups" is a gem.

Good start, Trev. May I rewrite your lyrics this way?

So what ideas dance in your head tonight?
Is it the thoughts of your wasted life?
Are you that busy or is that just a mask?
Has life become such an arduous task?

What secret thoughts are written down,
That buries your smile, causes a frown?
What are the thoughts you've written down?
Is your heart broken, pieces on the ground?

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.

Back to the purse thing:

The faded pictures in her purse
People she once knew
The old flame, she once thought
"I'll end up back with you."

The mirror she uses
To re-touch the make-up,
Hiding the lines
Of a hundred break-ups

The key to her apartment
The one (that) he returned
When he told her it was over
As far as he's concerned

Geez, I hope one of you can save this chick.
It doesn't look good for her.
(I just broke her up with her last boyfriend.)

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.

Digging further into her purse (or Digging again into her purse)
As if it really mattered
Brushed aside a tissue
All too worn and tattered

It once held the tears she shed
From a love gone bad
Now it served as a reminder
Of that love she once had

It's getting worse. Someone stop me!

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.
