The Best Way to Be

An old blues man
Sits on the porch step
Strumming chords on his ol' blunt axe
Singing songs of the cowboys, the west and the trail worn hacks

Chorus: In his heart he longs for the old times
When days were simple and free
When he wasn't tied down to roaming round town
And the best way to be was to be

But those days are here no longer
The modern world answers his call
The noise of the big city traffic
And he wonders what became of it all

Chorus

His free and simple existence
Unhindered by progress of man
Vanishes into the distance
As the future puts paid to his plans

Chorus

Decided to dust this one off from December 2006 to push it for this week's assignment. If you fancy giving it a pick and grin, thrash and howl, or otherwise, just use E A B7.

Take care,

Casey

Hey Shady

I found this while looking for more information for suggestions for Week 34 part 2.

Pretty good song for the most part I'm just having a small problem with the first verse:
An old blues man
Sits on the porch step
Strumming chords on his ol' blunt axe
Singing songs of the cowboys, the west and the trail worn hacks

It seems your imagery is all over the place.
You start with an old Blues man and end with cowboys and the west.
Through in the ol' blunt axe which for me seems a little more Rock
and it leaves me a bit confused.

Is this a Blues,Country/Cowboy song or something else all together?

I'm thinking from the rest of the song the Country /Cowboy is more what you are looking for.

Maybe something like:
The old cowboy sits on the front step
Strumming chords on his ol' guitar
Singing songs of the wranglers,
on the trail sleeping under the stars

The last line of the second verse reads a little odd also.
As the future puts paid to his plans

Not quite sure what "puts paid to his plans" is suppose to mean.

Maybe:
The future ruined his best laid plans

Just Some Thoughts

Like John, I was a little confused at first - an ole bluesman singing country songs? I like his suggestions for the first verse, they seem to fit the mood a little better.

Second and third verses are fine - that nostalgic yearning for simpler days and a simpler lifestyle is something I can easily relate to. With that in mind, rather than use "the future" as the song's set in the here-and-now - you could try something like "but the present intrudes on his plans."

Just suggestions, as always. I like where this is heading - just a few minor tweaks and I think you've got a good one.
