Y8W41 Snowman

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9518018

I was born this side of an avalanche
Made by children's hands
Oars hit waves and my intestines froze
As I sat weeping in the dark, dark night

From the first shower of early winter
Even a monkey seems to crave for a raincoat
Snowman, even though you feel cold,
Don't warm yourself by the fire

Tonight the wind blowing through the Basho tree
I hear the leaking rain drop against a basin
On a snowy morning I sat by myself
Chewing tough strips of dried salmon

In the sky of eight or nine yards above the willows
Drizzling rain falls
Snowman, even though you feel cold,
Don't warm yourself by the fire

aw, James, i don't know why you haven't got a reply yet, but i am head over heels!

the avalanche (because of leonard cohen) and the snowman (because, well, snow is grand!) got me from hello ;-)
the chorus line is beautiful! as is the rest.
as is the funny sound at the end of the song- that electric piano like melody :-)
cool that you mixed that with campfire music (no offense! compliment!)

was doubtful about the monkey line, but sounded well when you sang it

i like!!
thanks for sharing!
cheers,
straycat.

Hi Straycat,

Thanks so much for the listen and post :D
i don't know why you haven't got a reply yet
Well, I'm the one person that can't answer that for you
I chalked it up to the motto....Mommy always said if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all

You like the song and I do, too....so that's enough reason to have made it

The lyrics were mostly haiku poems strung together to tell a story. It was a bit off topic where we were supposed to write about a life changing event....for me the moral of the song was what people desire the most is "excess______" fill in the blank.....any desire can be taken to extremes.....so the snowman craves warmth but if he gets what he wants, it will destroy him.....sort of like the moth to the flame.....snowman to the fire :P
(no offense! compliment!)
No offense taken  I like that synth sound, too. For me it sounded like snow melting....or a snowman sweating....etc :D

For a bonus since you like this song, you might like the the "original song" much more. I'll reveal the melody idea "borrowing" (at least the verses) came from:
Sufjan Stephen's "For The Widows In Paradise, For The Fatherless In Ypsilanti"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4tkiGvV_ek

I find ""For The Widows In Paradise" and many of his songs captivating!

Thanks again.

James

haiku poems, cool!
oh and thank you very much for the link! had listened to some surfjan songs before and liked them but they didn't really move me or whatever it is that makes me run to the cd store and to concerts.. this one did! he's on my things-to-look-out-for list now :D in that video he looks a tiny bit like a musician from my hometown.. :) (contrast and compare: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OUp0ySb4tQ  )

cheers,
straycat.

Agreed :D

He has some experimental stuff for sure....as far as more "acoustic" sounding songs of his, you might like these two as well:
