Someone already did a song about Saul's conversion on the road to Damascus so I decided to go with my favorite, Saint Vince Lombardi, patronn Saint of all Packer fans. He wrote a book that is long out of print called "Run to Daylight". Every High School coach in Wisconsin quoted him.
He had quotes like "If it doesn't matter who wins or loses, then why do they keep score?" and "It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up."

Run to Daylight

(G)I was on the football team
(C)We never were the best
(G)The coach gave talks to inspire
(D)We were all impressed.
(G)Since then, I've encountered trouble
(C)A few times through the years
(G) When that happens one of his old speeches
(D)Comes ringing back to my (G) ears

Run to (G) daylight
Go towards the (D) sun
When it (Em) looks like they're getting you (G) down
And you're (C) falling to the (Am) ground
Keep your (G) feet, (C) your works just (D) begun
Get up and (G) Run

(G) The boss called me into his office
(C) I was being replaced
(G) Another man would sit in my chair
(D) Old customers would find a new face
(G)Cleaning out the desk
(C)Felt like the future had been stolen
(G)I heard a voice say "For every door that closes
(D)Another entrance (G) opens"

Chorus

(G) I had to ask some questions
(C) When things just didn't make sense
(G) She never admitted the whole truth
(D) But blaming me was her defense
(G) My world shattered, caving in
(C) The only answer was to fall
(G) I was climbing over a railing
(D) When I heard the coach (G) call

chorus

(G) My mother battled cancer
(C) A fight she could never win
(G) She hung on as long as she could
(D) Refused to just give in
(G) Before she closed her eyes
(C) For the very last time
(G) I prayed that she could hear the words
(D) That echoed in my (G) mind

Run to (G) daylight
Go towards the (D) sun
When it (Em) feels like its getting you (G) down
And you're (C) heading to the (Am) ground
Keep your (G) feet, (C) your work here is almost (D) done
Get up and (G) Run

I decided my chord structure and melody were redundant of other things I have written. This is a rewrite with slight edits to the lyrics and an entirely different approach to the chords/melody.

Run to Daylight

(C)I was on the (Bm) football team
(Em)We never were (Am7) the best
(C) But the coach gave talks (Bm) to inspire us
(Em)We were all (C) impressed (D)
(G)Since then, I've (Dm) encountered trouble
(C)A few times through the (G) years
(Em) When that happens (C) one of his old speeches
(D)Comes ringing back to my ears

Run to (G) daylight
Go towards the (Dm) sun
Keep your (Em) feet moving, (C) your work has just (D) begun
Get up and (G) Run

(C) The boss called me into his (Bm) office
(Em) I was being (Am7) replaced
(C) Another man would (Bm) sit in my chair
(Em) They would have a (C)brand new(D) face
(G)Cleaning out the (Dm) desk
(C) My career had been (G) stolen
(Em)I heard a voice say (C) “for every door that closes
(D)Another entrance opens”

Chorus

(C) I had to ask some (Bm) questions
(Em) When things just didn't make (Am7)sense
(C) She never admitted the (Bm) truth
(Em) Blaming me was (C) her de(D)fense
(G) My world was (Dm) caving in
(C) The answer was to (G) fall
(Em) Climbing over a (C) rusty rail
(D) When I heard my old coach call

chorus

(C) Mother battled (Bm) cancer
(Em) A fight she could never (Am7) win
(C) She hung on as (Bm) long as she could
(Em) Refused to (C) just give (D) in
(G) Before she closed her (Dm) eyes
(C) For the very last (G) time
(Em) I prayed that she could (C) hear the words
(D) That echoed in my mind

Run to (G) daylight
Go towards the (Dm) sun
Keep your (Em) feet moving, (C) your work is almost (D) done
Get up and (G) Run

MrEWorm,

Good start :D Vs 1 sets up the background well.......Just kill the dog and repo the truck and you've got all the classic country angles covered  :P

This reminds me of a movie I saw recently where childhood friends became disillusioned by the realities of life but still had a fond spot in their hearts for their basketball coach for his inspiration in their lives.

Thanks for sharing.
