I recently broke the headstock on my 12 string guitar and fixed it myself (with help from this forum, http://forums.guitarnoise.com/viewtopic.php?t=34033 ). I've played guitar since i was about 7 years old (14 years) and having to look at my broken guitar everyday got me to thinking for the first time ever how guitars are made. I did a bit of research on it and I decided to buy a book (guitarmaking: tradition and technology) on the subject. My dad has a huge woodworking shop at his house with pretty much all of the tools i would need. I plan on building my first guitar from scratch in about 1 year.

Which brings me to my suggestion for this forum. How about a luthier specific category? It may just inspire someone that would have never otherwise even considered where his/her guitar came from.

As far as I can tell, any luthierie questions have been dealt with in the repair forum, which itself is not especially busy.

I understand what you are suggesting, but I don't think there would be enough traffic to make a separate category.

Just one guy's opinion. It'll be interesting to see what everyone else thinks.

Well, much like you I am also very interested in how guitar related stuff works: I built my own talk-box using my old amplifier, a mid range driver and some VERY, VERY basic wiring, I also put a true-bypass switch into my Crybaby Wah. I'm not sure how popular a luthierie forum category would be, I kind of agree with kent_eh, unless more people were interested I think it wouldn't work. I think it would be interesting, though, if we had more luthier posts, links or even articles, if possible, or even if more links to luthierie sites were posted.

Right now I'm mainly interested in Electronics type stuff: My next projects include:

A couple distortion pedals
A/B box or A/B/Y box or splitter (haven't decided entirely what I want)

I was thinking of maybe building some-sort of a lap-steel guitar built into a table (I don't know how well it would work or sound, but I think it would be a unique piece of furniture), anyways, if you're interested in luthierie check out:

http://www.frets.com

stewmac is a luthier supplier but it has a free information section that I've learned stuff from, frets.com has alot of good articles focusing on acoustic guitars.

How about just adding it to the existing forum: "Guitar Building, Repair, and Maintenance"? It seems like the subject matter fits in well with that category.
