Hi, I have been reading some of the comments on improving the site, especially the revenue ones.

I like most people that frequent this site realize that it must cost a bundle to operate and I doubt you get that many donations. I greatly value this site and I feel guilty that I havent donated yet so I have a couple of suggestions.

First of all I would be willing to donate say 2 bucks a month automatically on my credit card, if that can be set up, and I would imagine there will be others that would do the same. Nobody misses two bucks.

My second suggestion - I am not sure if it is legal but -

You could have a draw every month, sort of like an even split. You could bill anyone interested via CC automatically say 4 dollars. At the end of the month you use half of the money to buy a guitar for a winner to be drawn from the donaters. The first few times you may not get that much but I bet it will catch on. After it was running a few months if the revenue grew you could advertize the prize at the beggining of the month. I bet if there was a prize of say a Gibson Hummingbird or Taylor 710 you would generate a lot of interest. Posting a pic of the winner with his new gear would generate some interest I think. I realize you couldn't get those type of prizes unless the revenue allowed.

People like me would much prefer to enter a contest where the winner would always be from the community. And your chance of winning would be fairly realistic. If you didn't get many people at first you could just give away a capo or a tuner for the first draw.

Just a thought.

Cheers,

Max

I think organizing it would be kinda difficult, but it sounds like a good idea.

I cant wait to donate to GN. I just have to wait until I get a job first, to actually have money to send. The tips from this site have been invalueble

I don't think becoming a pay site would be good  but, why not do like NPR and public TV. have a fund drive once or twice a year, we could make it fun, maybe when someone clicks on a forum, a popup would flash up with a message( maybe a flash animation with a GN members song) and ask for a donation. we could have goals, and prizes. maybe incorperate a special guest or two--the dog

Umm, we do that now. There is a mini-fundraiser at the end of the year, where the "Donate" button is unpacked from the closet and put at the top of the homepage.

Here is the permanent link, which can only be seen from the homepage.

Believe it or not, some forum members have never been to the Homepage.

Well actually I wasn't advocating this site to become a pay site. There are many users who probably couldn't afford it. I am saying that I personally would pay a nominal fee each month via cc. At the end of each month there is always at least a couple of hundred dollars on my CC and what would two or three more mean. It is as much as one or two cups of coffee at a shop. I thought there might be more people in my shoes out there. This charge would still be voluntary and give no special privledges. The site would still be free for everyone. I will donate either way, I have benefited greatly from this site.

As for the prize idea, It may not even be legal or feasable but I figure I buy tickets on things from the neighborhood kids on all kinds of stuff and much of it I don't nessicarily need or want.

Cheers,

Max

I was thinking maybe some one who donated say $40. might get a cd, $60. a dvd, Not realy a prize as such. But since we don't have a room full of volunteers like npr/pbs it might be hard to do. Going to have to find that home page :D :D

Unfortunately, one potential problem with the contests or pbs-style fundraising is the very real and possibly quite complicated tax ramifications - such activities are often closely scrutinized.
