No, Alan hasn't gone off his rocker and posted something here instead of over at TrumpetNoise.com

I had my first student taking Grade exams the other week, and he passed his Classical Guitar Step 1 with Honours, scoring 86%.

So, well done to Joseph. He is 11 years old, and has been playing for one year. His reward from his parents is an electric guitar starter pack.

Best,

A :-)

Exciting!

Congrats to him for passing and to you for that great feeling of pride you must have! :D

Just curiosity, what kind of stuff do they test? I've never heard of a standardized guitar examination.

Step 1 for Classical Guitar

One octave scales in C and Am - from memory, with i-m-i-m- fingering
Broken open position chords pf C and Am
Three melodies from memory (you choose from a selection of 8)
Musical knowledge - note names and values and pitch names

There's also a Step 2 before you get to the Grades proper

Best,

A :-)

As his teacher, I got the report from the Examiner. It uses phrases like "excellent" and "good intonation". "Good control of melodic line" was the best one. Seeing that my student got full marks for his scales and musical knowledge was very pleasing. His mum was jumping around the house cheering after I read it to her.
