I have been trying to play Layla unplugged for some time now (too embarassed to say how long!) and while listening to the CD started tapping my foot to San Francisco Bay Blues - then got a tab and started strumming along.

However it has a D7/F# and I can't figure out what to play. D7 actually sounds OK to me...

The chords are :-

F
I didn't mean it treat her so bad,
C A7
She was the best girl I ever ever had.
D7/F# G7
I said goodbye, I can take a cry, I wan-na lay down ‘n' die.

How to play D7/F#:
Well the usual way I play D7/F# ( or D/F#) is put my thumb over the top of the neck and hold the 6th string second fret with my thumb. ie

from low to high e: D7/F# = 200212 ...

Why it sounds good?
Well the reason it sounds good it because F# is a note in D7 ie the notes that make up D7 are D F# A C . All the slash means is that instead of playing the root note(D) as the bass note you play F#(or whatever note comes after the slash). Theres more to it then that but for reading tab and chords thats all you need to know.

Could it be a D7 that walks the F# on the 6th string to the G7 chord.

check out my website for good recording/playing info
