I would like to record some of my playing just so that I can hear what it sounds like. Would be nice to have three or four tracks so that I can try to put down a strumming track or such..
I don't feel justified spending money on some real recording software; web search has come up empty..
Any suggestions?
thanks in advance.

Audacity. Free, Windows / Mac / Linux. Multi-track capable. You can record one track, then play it back and record at the same time to lay down a second (third, fourth...) track too. I haven't used it extensively, but use it pretty much like you want to - just to see how I sound. HTH.

Thanks to Nick, putting them all in one spot!
I second the recommendation of Audacity. It's free, open source and almost as good as Protools. Don't leave home without it.

This is exactly the sort of thing I have been looking for! Thanks for the recommendation!
I assume, then, that all I would need to do to use this software is to get an adapter to plug my guitar into my mic jack on the computer?
I have to agree with the Audacity, it works well and the price is right :D
Brad, I'm not sure if an unamplified electric guitar signal would work. Anyone?
You can just buy a computer mic and play as normal. It's fine for the 'am I playing in time' type recording.

You will need a mixer. This will get you started and it has phantom power :D

smokindog, does this hook directly to your computer? If so this would be GREAT to have! Also does this actually RECORD or do you need that as well?
Thanks
This is actually about an acoustic/electric but the same principles apply...

this plugs in to your sound card, into the "line in"jack NOT the mic jack. the mixer adjusts the input vol leval and EQ, also acts as a preamp for mics that need phantom power. You will need the cable from the link above :D

AHHH..and I am assuming if I use an effects processor like Guitar port the processor has to come before the mixer correct?
Thanks! Looks like I got more G.A.S.!! :P :P :P :P :P
You didn't mention the Line 6 guitarport :P
Don't you just go
guitar> guitarport> USB to Computer and stereo output to speakers or headphones?

Yea that's how I have it but I thought the mixer would give me more options?
I don't know about the line 6 guitar port or using the USB port, the mixer is analog so you cant plug it into the USB port ( its digital) You can get a USB interface instead of a mixer, but your talking a lot more money.
