I started my lessons about 3 weeks ago, and my teacher took me back a little ways in my progression, and we're working on learning the notes on each string first. He mentioned that I need to learn all the notes in every position. I'm assuming the first would be where I'm at now (closest to the headstock) Was just curious how many positions there are, and where they start. He said we're starting at the first postion, but some books start at the fifth.

There are as many positions as there are frets. sort of.
when assigning fingers to frets or playing scales ect..
The 1st fret is the first position the 5th fret is the 5th position.
So if you play a major scale for example starting at the 5th position you are playing an A major scale.
Take barre chords, each position (ie fret) results in a different chord being sounded from the same shape fingered at different frets.
