First, I spent a month learning some basic chords on a classical guitar from a beginners CD.
Then, I bought a steel string Ibanez, and taught myself from David's (and others') articles here on Guitar Noise. Also, I am in a church band as a backup vocalist (and now guitarist), so I practiced the songs in my own time from chord sheets, playing along with CD's.
Started looking for a teacher after about 10 months. Third time lucky; I'm still going for lessons with him 6 months later. I still use articles on GN (e.g. during school holidays, when my music school also closes), still practice with the church chord sheets, and try to play with other musicians at every opportunity I get (maybe once a month, sadly).
Also, I get inspiration watching live music at a little theatre restaurant at least once a month.
