I'm looking to record myself but I'm lost as to how to go about this. Do I need to get special software, mics, etc.

I'm just looking to use this as a tool for improvement, not to subject others to.

Any suggestions as to how to do this would be appreciated?

Thanks TL. I did look there but it's all over my head. I was just looking for an easy way to record myself onto my pc to check my progress from time to time. I'll just forget about it for now and keep practicing.

Nah, don't just forget about it. For the absolute simplest of setups, you need a standard PC mic, to be had at Wally world, Office Depot, just about anywhere. And you need software. Luckily, there are two that do good jobs that are free. I use Audacity mostly, but a lot of people have good things to say about Kristal.

yea don't give up so easy,
i was of exactly the same frame of mind when i first looked into it.
like banre said, get audacity, a mic, and an adapter for your guitar cord, ask pointed questions as you run into problems reguardless of how simple or silly it seems. we've all been there.
of course you should always search google and GN before posting.

If I can do it anyone can ..

it's not that hard once you get in to it and if you go to " in the studio " on this site there are some very good discussions on exactly this subject .

Audacity I use and trust me I'm a dummy when it comes to computors , with the help from the folks "in the studio" they got me up and recording I now record myself on a weekly basis and I think it has improved my playing I'm now listening and saying things like ," that was a good change "
or opps that was late / early , check it out , in the studio .

Hilch :?:

Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am
