I can at least tell you that I have been happy with my Squire strat pack I bought a year and a half ago. I just sent the guitar into the shop (one I bought if from) to have it setup for me as I finally know the difference now. One advantage of buying one from your local shop is they will try and take care of you to ensure your continued buisiness. Online will of course exchange it but you will be out the shipping costs. I would go with something locally even if it isn't the squire as if you have problems they will or should be there to help you through them.

What Boudreau says is all too true. Asking for opinions here is a good way to get a general idea of things to look at. But, don't decide based purely off what these people say. Go and try out some guitars, talk to the guys at the shops and bring a more experienced buddy with you.
