I can't figure out if this is a strength issue, or a technique issue or anything else, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to get a good barre in this situation.

It's a song called Waltz to the Moon, it sounds great in my opinion, but I am hurting my hand when going trying to play this song. The video has me playing the first part, then a close up of the fretboard so it may be of some better help.
sorry for the sound, my kid was a bit grouchy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, it's frustrating the heck out of me.

Is it not possible to rearrange the fingering so that you don't need to hold that shape? I couldn't see quite what was going on from the video, and I don't know the song. But provided the main melody keeps going can't you re-arrange it slightly to suit your hand? Are you using a particular TAB or what?
It's a pretty song, and you're sounding good, so I hope you can through the frustrating part.

Joe. I noticed when you barre your index finger is pointing towards the right. the finger plainly lies across
the fifth fret and nearly covers the sixth fret.
when the finger points that direction it pulls the rest of the fingers backwards; away from the frets you Want to hit
with those fingers.
try to barre with the index aiming more straight up. the pinky, and ring finger automatically shift forward; lengthening
their reach.
it's a bit awkward at first.
and finally, my mantra. my beat the dead horse maxim...
the thumb should be aiming more towards the headstock than straight up
and lying on the back of the neck near the centerline.

I'm not sure if it HAS to be a barre, I've dumbed it down a bit because I can't pull off a x109787, that "C" shape with the barre is extremely hard for me so I just play x79787. And for the others, part of the thing that makes it sound like what it sounds like is because of the constant beats, and in order to do that the song goes like xx3553 or something like that.

Dogbite, I"m going to try your suggestions on the barres when I get off work. If I've got to learn to crawl again the so be it, I would love to be able to play this.

When I watched the video I noted the same thing than Dogbite. Fortunately he already suggested as to modify the position.
I remember I commented it with a friends some months ago. We are trying to find several chord voices along the fretboard and we got the a "C barre shape". Some days later he told me he found a video by Richie Kotzen where he explained the advantages of barre chords with the index slightly "rotated" to the head as Dogbite did. I don't remember if it was on YouTube or on p2p networks. I will ask him next time.
I've tried to adjust, and wow, it hurts!!!! Alot!!! I did find out that when using my electric guitar with an acoustic voicing and some chorus, that is sounds really kick ass, and I can even play it with some proficiency.....perhaps that will be what I use, I think it kind of sounds better than the acoustic.....maybe it's because I can actually play it though LOL.
Not giving up on playing it on the acoustic, but I'll have to work on my hand strength, there was a whole lot of pain.

Some great suggestions there...
What i used to do to practice finger strength is use hand grips (like a v shaped spring with plastic handles that you close together), this really helped with any bars i played and quickly. There's also something i do when i'm carrying any sort of bag (shopping bag etc) - lower the handles of the bag onto my fingertips and then just using one fingertip at a time, lift the bag as high as i can, and then repeat for all fingers followed by all fingers together.
I know it doesn't sound like guitar advice, but when you have finger strength everything on the guitar is that little bit easier, especially awkward chord shapes with full bars.
