Or you can look up sweep picking and try your hand at that. Arpeggios will really work up your solo speed.

When I started learning guitar, If something didn't make sense to me I just blew it off for a month or so(scales come to mind) and came back to it with a fresh outlook as well as a better understanding of the why & how of the problem at hand. Maybe it'll work for you.
