Right here's the question, a lot hinges on it, so please help!

I had read somewhere that you shoud keep your thumbs behind the fretboard and not let it hang over like most guitarists do (apparently it is not correct technique and is a bad habit).

Any way i tried this on my friend's guitar the other day (a lovely epiphany Les Paul) and not only did this feel awkward but also the general psoition made my hand hurt and my wrist ache.

So is this because i've never done this before and will get better as my technique and strength improve, or are my hands too small. Now i have got smallish hands but my friend think i'll have no worries and says that smaller hands probably make it easier to play.

So is there a test or something i can do to check if my hands are a limiting factor?

Thanks.
Mart.

You probably had the guitar slung too low, or didn't have the neck pointed up far enough.

You might be right actually. Now that i think about it, i had no foot rest for my rgith foot, and when i played standing up, the strap was too long.

Good call. Thanks.
Mart.
