Some Quesitons from a Total Newbie!

Well ... have guitar in hand and obviously want to get going.

I have some questions though. When it says "half measure" on a song - what does it mean?

Also I want to learn the Indigo Girls "Hey Jesus" but don't totally understand the following

My questions are as follows:

1) Regarding the cords it lists - those numbers are I would hope - not where my fingers are supposed to me (kinda hard to have my 2 finger in three different places at the same time). I mean G does not look anything like those number - so what does it mean?

2) How do I know what "form" these cords are? I can look up in my cord book the standard cord form - but know that its dependant on the fret ... I don't see that anywhere

3) The strumming patterns make no sense to me?! Can anyone explain this to me?

The numbers look to me as what fret and string. The G would look like this.
Fingers.....I= index, M= middel, R= ring, P= pinky

A|---|-M|---|---|---|---
E|---|---|--I|---|---|---

As for the strumming pattern I would have to hear the song in order to match what its suppose to sound like. I would try just using regular up and downstroks at first until you get the flow of the changes or listen to the song and try to play along with it listening to the chord changes and strumming pattern.

I nowsee what you mean ...

So effectively telling both form and fret in one. I just have to innately know the fingers for the cords.

That is really useful, but I guess I am so used to looking at tabs for fingerings that it did not compute.

You're also supposed to have a capo on third fret, but I doubt you have one...

Hi Day Tripper,

I just bought a capo yesterday ... but it seems a really violent peace of machinery (smile). I cannot seem to open it enough to get it around the strings (the back of my fretboard is oval) ... so right no I am doing wrist workouts with it ... hopefully someday it will losen enough so I can use it!

Ah - and I almost forgot - what does the "half measure" comment mean?

Capos shouldn't be that hard to put on a guitar.

What type is it? Maybe you can find it on a music website and copy a link if not the actual than one that looks similar. Then someone here can tell you if you are using it correctly. You don't want to scratch your guitar trying to force it on incorrectly.

Ah ... so it should not be soo tight?

The brand is Kyser Klassics and it is not loosening up. I am exchange my guitar this weekend (bought the show room one) and maybe I should bring the capo in at the same time.

I'd try the song without the capo.
G(Bb)* 3 2 0 0 2 2

The (Bb) and (Eb9) and (Gm7) are what you would be playing if you did it without a capo. Some of the chords might be harder than the chords with the capo, however it would save you a lot of confusion/wrist pain from trying to open the capo.
