When reading tab, if there is a line between to notes like 0
0
2
I
4
0
(I had to use an "I" in my example but in the notation it's not an I or a 1). What does it mean?

Normally, it means that the string is not played. You can use a finger that is on one of the adjacent strings to mute the one that isn't played.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

Why don't they just use an " x " ?

A lot of the guitar pro tabs have them.

If you look here, you'll see a couple of examples. I think it may differentiate between a fingerpicked chord (|) and a strummed chord (x).
