This 1949 classic is usually transcribed as a very simple, basic three chord song,
pretty much as follows:

[C]Hear that lone-some whip – poor - will;
He sounds too blue to fly...[C7]
The [F] mid - night train is [C] whin - ing low
I'm so lone – some [G7] I could [C] cry......[G7]

However, should you care to add "color" and "voicing" to your chords,
....yes, you rhythm players accompanying yourselves, too...
You can gussy up a song like this and make it sound a lot nicer.
In most cases, these chord changes only require a move of one finger to effect the voicing.
These chord changes are those used by "the Guitar Guy"in his online version:

[C]Hear that [C/B]lone-some [Am7]whip – poor - [Am7/G] will;
He [C] sounds too blue to [Gm7] fly.. [C7]
The [F] mid - night [Fm]train is [C] whin - ing [Am]low
[G]I'm so [C] lone – some [G7] I could [C] cry. [G] [Am7] [G/B]

Try that if you'd like to try some fancier stuff.......oh yes...here's the rest of the verses:

I've nev - er seen a night so long,
When time goes crawl - ing by; ~ (beat)
The moon just went be- hind a cloud;
I'm so lone - some I could cry....[beat]

Did you e-ver see a Rob - in weep
When leaves be - gin to die? ~ (beat)
That means he's lost the will to live;
I'm so lone - some I could cry....[beat]

The si-lence of a fal -ling star
Lights up a pur - ple sky; ~ (beat)
And as I won - der where you are,
I'm so lone - some I could cry....[beat]

Chord shapes I use for this :
C/B: x22010 Am7: x02010 Am7/G: 302010 Gm7: xx3333
F: xx3211 Fm: xx3111 G/B: x20001
