Here's an old soul classic that was probably more popular when it was brought back to life by the by the powerful performance by Andrew Strong as Declan "Deco" Cuffe, Lead Singer of the Commitments, from the film of the same name.
Hard to believe he was only 16 years old then (what a powerful voice).
Also covered by loads of other artists such as "The Flying Burrito Brothers" I have a copy of this as done by The Peter Green Splinter Group, but none really compare to the original by Percy Sledge.

G F#m Em G F#m Em
At the dark end of the street that's where we'll always meet
G C G
Hiding in shadows where we don't belong
C D G C G
Living in darkness to hide our wrongs you and me
C D G C G
At the dark end of the street you and me
G F#m Em
I know that time's gonna take it's toll
G F#m Em
We'll have to pay for the love that we stole
G C G
Oh it's a sin and we both know that we're wrong
C D G C G
But our love keeps coming on strong you and me
C D G C G
At the dark end of the street you and me
G Em
They're gonna find us they're gonna find us
G C
They're gonna find us Oh someday
G C D G C G
We'll steal away to the dark end of the street you and me

G F#m Em G F#m Em
If you should take a walk downtown and find some time to look around
G C G
If you should see me and I walk on by
C D G C G G7
Oh darling please don't cry tonight we'll meet
C D G C G
At the dark end of the street you and me
C G C G
You and me you and me

I like to arpeggio the end of the Em just a little bit by doing the following
Play the Em just once and then pick the open G,B & E strings in succession as shown by the tab
E:---0--0-------0--------------------------
B:---0----0---0----------------------------
G:---0------0------------------------------
D:---2-------------------------------------
A:---2-------------------------------------
E:---0-------------------------------------

Unfortunately I can't find a version of Percy singing this but this is superb http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65GfSt75MVc

You're welcome. :)
He's not a very well known artist.
I'm a big fan of Dann Penn, the guy who wrote it (he also wrote Do Right Woman, Do Right Man; another fave).
Penn does a stunning version of 'Dark End' with Spooner Oldham on an album called 'Moments From This Theatre'.

I'd never heard of James Carr either, so thanks very much for the link, Don. Thanks also for the "Dark End" tab, Rodders - I love the "Commitments" film. Must get round to tabbing out "Try A Little Tenderness" one of these days - I love their version, IMO it even bets Otis's version.

Thanks, Elecktra, but I've had that film on VHS since the first time it was shown on TV, ooh, more years than I like to think about - my youngest daughter grew up having to watch it at least three times a week for her first ten years on the planet!

Like Rodders said, amazing to thing that Andrew Strong was only 16 when he sang in that film - I thought he'd have a huge career. Like Steve Winwood was only 15 when he did "Gimme Some Lovin'" with the Spencer Davis Group - and Jimmy McCullough (talented guitarist, died too young) was only 14 when he played guitar on "Something In The Air" by Thunderclap Newman.

I have to agree with you Vic whole heartedly about the Commitments version of "Try a Little tenderness".
The structure and the production of that whole performance is absolutely astounding.
Starting with just piano, Dec singing. then in come the drums just tick tacking away, then the visual of the girls swaying to and fro. then that terrific little reggae style riff from the guitar giving the song a sort of swing feel and then all hell breaks loose as the song comes to a climax with the whole band playing and singing in unison. Its not just the song that does it for me here, its the whole visual aspect that "Alan Parker" the director of the film gets across.
A truly great performance
