So I want to switch from a distortion patch with some stuff on it to a clean setting (w/ delay & reverb). But I want the effects on the first patch to decay naturally. What's your favorite method of achieving this?

you could run your clean stuff after the delay. switching off the delay and letting that decay naturally might work.

It sounds to me like you might be using a multi effects unit? If so, you may have to refer to your owners manual, as they're not all set up the same.
