Reading rhythm

So I just found some drum music from when I was child, I was going to learn to play drums but I never got it I never understood the music I can remember looking at it and it meaning nothing to me. Looking at it now it seems really simple, I'm getting understand more complex rhythms though sometimes I still need a bit of help here and there. This stuff is basic though minims, crotches, quavers, semi-quavers. I don't know if it was my fault or my teachers or whether I was just too young at the time but I wish I'd learned then how to understand it would have made my musical life easier. Never mind, I'm getting there now.
