I play G and C "barre" like this

a--------2------
e--------3------- "G" shape"

d--------2--------
a--------3---------
e--------X---------- "C" shape

Pay attention to open string opportunities, you can use and open string with a diad to enhance the bass line, as a drone, or to funk up a vamp.....

Diads, diads, diads....

KILL WHITEY!

FYI - I have the Fretboard Logic series of books and DVD. It is a pretty interesting take on chords and scales. It does indeed talk etensively about taking "open" chord fingering and moving them up the fretboard with the aid of a barre. I found it very interesting, but not all that practical in practice, except of course for the E and A fingering.
