Hi all,
I've been learning a load of acoustic tracks lately but am having trouble with Maggie May(Rod Stewart).
The problem is the song is in written in 'A'.I can sing it in this key but Rod sings it an Octave higher than I can.I've got a pretty flexible voice and can tackle most songs without changing the Key.(I hate it when people change the key to a song to suit their voice as it usually loses all the original feeling of the song).Anyhow back to the problem.I transposed the song in to every key but the chords just don't sound right.
What I would like to know is would using a capo and thus keeeping the chord shapes the same give me back the feel of the song even though its in a different key?
In all the years I've been playing I've never used or had the need for a capo so don't know much about them.

Any help much appreciated.

I do Maggie May with my students as it's a good basis for pounding rhythms.

Yes, using a capo will help as the chord shapes will remain the same and the subtle phrases in the introduction will still be there. The change from Em to F#m and back again doesn't become any easier, but at least you might be able to fit the song into your vocal range more easily.

Best,

A :-)

Cheers Alan,
No problem with the chords or the chord changes. The Em - F# really highlights the problem as other minor chords just don't have the nuiances as the Em.

Thanks
