John butler - ocean - please help! :)

Hi there

I am a fairly experienced guitar player, but Im having trouble playing this song.

I am using this tab. Open C tuning, capo 4th fret.

at around 1:40 in this song, bar 34 in the tab, John plays a bar that is tabbed as

This implies a shuffle rhythm should be played, but if you listen, it sounds as if John is playing 16th note triplets. It certainly sounds much more "full" than what Im playing.

Maybe Its because he uses a 12-string? (im playing 6 string) or maybe he's using an effect?

If it is that hes playing 16th note triplets, can someone give me some tips for technique, because this is really holding me back, and it happens so much in this song, its not just that bar. If not, can someone please try and give me an answer, because its a strong ambition of mine to be able to play this note perfect, and Id really appreciate someones help.

Yes, he is playing 16th note triplets and you'll notice he regularly picks one note then does a hammer-on and a pull-off to generate the other two notes (and there's a lot of hammer-on from nowhere in there too), and that he's using index and middle fingers to support the work the thumb's doing. You can see this best when his right hand is closest to the camera, and in fact when the camera shows the palm of his right hand I can see the ring finger doing some work too.

Superb bit of playing on that video. I wish I could play like that.

Thanks a lot Alan..

So in the bit I tabbed out in my post, bar 34.. I guess he's not using hammers and pull offs for parts like that, as there's nowhere logical to hammer to? I guess he's just hitting the root note on the 1 and the 'a' , and using the 5 on G and open B to fill in, almost as ghost notes? And then just using hammers and pull offs where possible?

Very clever indeed.
