.......
^^ So can anyone direct me to a good place to learn the basics of this ?
What is it ?
I see alot of people playing fast heavy metal with this O_O, but is it used in other kinds of music ?
Do people do this in the classical guitar ?
I wanna be that guy that you wish you were ! ( i wish I were that guy)
You gotta set your sights high to get high!
Everyone is a teacher when you are looking to learn.
( wise stuff man! )
Its Kirby....
Here's a good into video on sweep picking: http://www.ultimate-guitar.tv/guitar_lessons/steal_this_video_sweep_picking.html
"The only way I know that guarantees no mistakes is not to play and that's simply not an option". David Hodge
thats the video i learned to sweep from. i certainly cant "shred" with sweeping, but thanks to that video i now use them often to arpeggiate chords.
"I like to play that guitar. I have to stare at it while I'm playing it because I'm not very good at playing it."
Noel Gallagher (who took the words right out of my mouth)
There's plenty of stuff on youtube, just start slow and stay slow it's one of those techniques that takes ages to learn.
I've tried to learn sweep picking before, but I can't do it... at all..
Hey man, I understand the frustration. Sweep picking is one of those techniques that is time consuming to learn and even more time consuming to learn how to use. That said, it is soooooo satisfying when you finally get it down.
That said, I'm going to go on a little bit of a rant here.
Beginning. . . now:
----------
Don't try to learn this stuff from YouTube or random internet lessons. Learning off of the internet is, in my experience both as a player and a full time teacher, one of the slowest ways to learn. Especially when it comes to learning a deeper technique like sweep picking.
Get a book, DVD, or instructor. It will probably cost you $20 and you'll save a few dozen hours of surfing/being frustrated. Well worth the investment.
And done.
----------
I did a quick search on Amazon and found these two resources, both of which look worthwhile.
I personally use this one:
but it is more of a whole-spectrum technique book. Not shred specific.
Hope that helps. :D
