First of all I'd like to say, I'm new to the electric world, having played mostly acoustic. Last year I finally bought some electric equipment, being a 50th year anniverary American Stratocaster & a 50w Marshall AVT amp. I also purchased a Sunrise pickup for my acoustic. I tried it out through the Marshall & was surprised to find it had a warm tone to it.

Heres the question.........

I think I need a preamp with EQ to boost the signal. Is this true?
I was thinking about this Fishman....

I was also told I could do the same with a Boss EQ.....

I think I'd be better off with the Fishman.

What do you guys think?

the fishman would need to be installed into your guitar. that involves cutting holes and drilling things. your pickup will also have to wired into the EQ. with a boss EQ, you plug into the pedal, then plug into the amp, and presto, done. the Boss also has 7 bands, where the fishman has 3. i'd go with the boss, personally

The Fishman isn't that type of EQ.

It's a separate box. The size is about 3"x5"x1 1/4" thick. It has an input & an output. It's just an external preamp. That Fishman I show has 5 bands.

interesting. my bad. i should look at the pics more closely next time. is it the type that clips to your strap? i guess in that case, the fishman would be better, as they specialize in acoustic amplification. but, the boss is more versatile as it has 2 more bands. that fishman is similar to my preamp on my Fender...i have a Fender by Fishman preamp, with 4 bands. it's not a bad little thing.

I attached a sound-hole pickup to my acoustic. Bought a zoom 504II - multi effect for acoustic guitar that serves as a pre-amp also.

You could put the Fishman ontop of the amp, on the floor, just about anywhere.

I was wondering about the EQ pedal also. Does it do the same thing or is it better just for electrics?

I have the boss eq and it does the same thing but it's not just for electrics. I like it a lot.
