I have a friend who recently purchased a mid 50's Gibson lap steel and he asked me what to use to lube the tuning machines. Anybody have any suggestions?

Are they enclosed tuners with an oil hole, or open gear tuners?

They are open tuners.

A little Vaseline painted on with a Testors art brush couldn't hurt, but may be messy depends on how much is used.

I normally use a PTFE (teflon oil) microlubricant from Radio Shack or the Source, same difference. :D

Oh heck, its just called a Precision Oiler - so much for 30 minutes Googling!

After using a little bit of automotive chassis grease for years, I've switched to anhydrous lanolin. Really slick, tenacious stuff.
