Washburn HB-35-WR

Hello All,

Four years ago I bought a Washburn HB-35-WR from
Musician's Friend. After a week, I knocked it off the
stand and the tuning headpiece broke clean off.

Warranty doesn't cover damage like that.

After sobbing, I took it to a local tech for repair.

He glued the piece back on and ever since, I have
not been able to keep the guitar in tune.

I've tried having it set up by a few other techs,
but no luck. Same problem. You play a G chord,
its in tune. Play an A chord, you will want to kill
yourself.

I love the guitar, and it gets great reviews online and I've
never seen a complaint about tuning problems.

Is it hopeless?

Can it be fixed or should I sell it as damaged goods and
buy a replacement?

thanks

Mark Conrad

I have a Washie HB-35. This guitar usually has the Buzz Feiten Tuning system, which means that you have to use a special tuner to intonate the guitar. If you try using a normal tuner for intonation, you'll never get it right.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

Hi Graybeard,

Thanks for reply. I've read this guitar has the Buzz Feiten tuning system but nobody
ever told me it required a special tuner. Where would I get such a tuner?

Strangely, nobody that has reviewed this guitar in the many reviews online ever
mention it, and none of the techs I spoke to or guitarists I know ever said a
word about it.

I'd like to hear from other guitarists regarding this, as well.

thanks...

MC

I have a Korg DT7 tuner, that has a function to allow me to intonate the BFTS. There aren't an awful lot of tuners that offer this feature, though.

If you look on the back of the headstock, there's normally a sticker/transfer to show that it is installed.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

Nope, no sticker on headstock. I checked inside the body, where the serial
number is. No indication of the tuning system.

I've just had a quick look at the Washburn site and it seems that they changed production facilities from Korea to Indonesia. At the same time they would appear to have dropped the BFTS, but I can't be certain when the change occurred.

So it's possible that yours doesn't have the BFTS fitted.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

One thing is for sure - it tuned up great before the break.

Just wondering with these kinds of breaks if its worth continuing trying
to get it fixed or better just to sell it as damaged?

Doesn't seem to be a lot online regarding repairing these kinds
of breaks and their attendent tuning after-effects.

My suggestion is to go and have a real working luthier, rather than a guitar shop tech, look at it.
