I'm in the process of shopping for all the accessories to finish my guitar, like the tuners and pots and was wondering if there was a list of things i'll need somewhere so i don't forget everything. I'm pretty new to the wiring so I don't know exactly everything i'll need for that part of it.

Thanks in advance!

Check out http://www.projectguitar.com and http://www.guitarnuts.com and look at the wiring diagram that suits your needs and you can tell what you will need.

If i'm trying to wire a sg style guitar regular i'm assuming i'll need a 2 pickups, 3 way switch, wire, 4 500k pots, and an output jack. Is that correct? I'm still not sure what the difference is between 250k pots and 500k. I've also read some things on capacitors but don't know if i need one or where exactly it will go.

500k pots are commonly used with humbuckers. 2 are for volume, 2 for tone.

The capacitors are for the tone pots - use .047mf or .022mf caps (the .047s are also common for use with humbuckers.)

The SG wiring you are doing should be the same as basic Les Paul wiring.

Thanks a lot, i didn't know they made kits for the wiring like that. That will be a huge help now for the wiring.

Oh, don't forget knobs! The pots don't come with them.

Pickup Ground ----------------------------------------------------- Jack Ground

Is that what you're after and/or legible enough?

Basic volume is hot pickup wire to one side of the volume pot, ground to the other side, and the middle of the pot is now the hot signal at whatever volume you've set, this goes straight to the output jack if there's no switching to be done.

Basic tone goes across the hot and ground with a variable resistor and a capacitor. Connect one side* of the tone pot to the hot, and the middle to one side of the capacitor. Connect the other side of the capacitor to the ground.

* Try both sides while you're wiring - If you pick the wrong side, the pot will work backwards, but it'll work :) You can hear the tone change in the pop you get when tapping the pickup with something metal, so no need to string it all up just to check.

Edit: Just found this - a more visual diagram of the same thing from this useful little site.
