I was sitting around the past few days with my acoustic, my electirc, amp, effects, and laptop, and was recording things just to kill time, and learn about Audacity, and I got to wondering a few things.
Mainly, I wanted to know if a mixer for a live show, powered mixer, or mixer with powererd speakers, could be run into a laptop, or any computer for that matter, and make a decent quality recording.
I'm curious, becuase I play some cafes that my old highschool puts off, and thought it would be neat to record the jams before hand, not the actual show, but the practices, some interesing songs come out of there.
So live show, ran through a mixer into a computer based recording program? Good idea?

As long as there's a direct output on the mixer it should work well enough. You'd need the RCA (or 1/4" - depending on your mixer) to 1/8" stereo cable to run to your laptop (depending on what your sound interface requires). What kind of mixer are you using?
I don't know the models of the mixers, the school has two powered ones that are rather nice, and I know they cost quite a bit, they put alot of money into their music program, but I can't remember the brands now.

As long as you hook the sound card up to the line out you should be ok.Be sure to record in stereo . We used to record to a tape deck from our stage mixer back in the 80's, Its pretty much the same thing :D

His laptop might not like 300-to-500 (or more) watts of power screaming through it using the "Main Outs" on a powered mixer.

He wants the "LINE OUT" NOT the line that goes to the speaker cabs :D Should be two RCA output jacks :D

Yeah, I should have asked if it was a safe idea, I don't feel like killing my laptop anytime soon.

Most powered PA boards have a line out just for that purpose ( recording) ..Botton line:read the manual to make sure its the right output 8) If this a school PA you might want to get help from the Audio/video department ( usually other students who do this kind of things As a hobby, some probably even have letter jackets for AV

I'll be sure to try it out. There's no AV club, but a large number of musicians.

Im not an expert but I actually was in the market until recently for some home recording equiptment. I was planning on getting a mixer but ended up getting with a USB audio interface. ( http://www.tascam.com/Products/US-122.html ) It cost me about $320 (Australian)
This might be relevant for you because laptops generally have pretty shoddy soundcards, so with a USB interface you can bypass the internal soundcard altogether. They are also pretty small and portable and dont require any power sockets or extra cable as it runs itself and any mic phantom power you might need via the USB power in the laptop.
Anyway, just a thought. If you already have a mixer you were thinking of using then yes, plugged into the back of the soundcard it will do the job also. But if you are looking to buy something new to do this job, i thought it might be something worth considering.
