I'm new with computers and could really use help as far as recording goes. Is all I need to record (use my computer as a recording studio of sorts) a microphone, or is there more to it than that? What other equipment (if any) will I need? How much $$$ will it cost?

Once I get the equipment I need, how do I go about recording my original songs on my computer? How do I save them in "my music" files?

I'd really appreciate some help!!!

You need whatever you want. Basically a soundcard and $5 microphone will get some kind of sound recorded. The more you spend (on microphones, pre-amps, cables, compressors, software, soundcards, mixers etc) the better it can *potentially* sound. How good the final result will be depends on how well you can play, how good your gear is and how well you use it. Once you have a mic all you need is a program that allows you to record. There are plenty of free programs like Kristal and Audacity (do a google on 'em) which will have you save your recordings as .wav or .mp3 to whatever folder you'd prefer.

My advice is to take it easy. You don't seem (no insult intended!) to be very much in the know about recording so it makes sense to start with the very basics: a mic, a soundcard, a cable and you yourself. Try to get the most from these simple pieces of gear and then gradually add/upgrade. That way you will know better what to buy and you will be better able to use them to their max.

What kind of budget do you have? Arjen has a good point..start simple and work into it :D You can start by downloading a freeware recording program called AUDACITY. Did I mention its FREE :D and it works very well. they also heve some tutorials on their web site. just play around with it , If I can figure it out ANY ONE can

here is a link to a earlier post that has some good basic info on it

I've recorded my songs before on cassette & reel to reel decks, but never on a computer. Just needed a little help getting started in the right direction.....thanks!

what kind of cassette recorder did you use, maybe if it was a 4-track and you still have it you can use it as a mixer

Oh, in that case I'm sure you'll have little problems working it out. I can't really help unless you have a specific problem, so try to get your hands on a mic, plug it in and install Audacity or some such program. If you run into problems plenty of folks here know how to get you along, and once the basic stuff is working adding more is dead-easy.
