Hi Everybody
I just got a tip of the free advanced multitrack recording SW "REAPER v.999".
http://www.cockos.com/reaper/index.php
For me it seems to be much more advanced than Audacity and Kristal Audio Engine.
It handles most media formats as wav, mp3, midi, etc.
It supports ASIO 2 drivers
VST, DX and DXi plugins are also supported.

I will do some recording tests in the near future

Thanks - please be sure to post your test results, and any comments you have on ease of use.
I'd be especially interested in your thoughts on the program's VST support.

Thanks, looks good. I love Audacity but practically no VSTs I've found work with it; I've yet to try the Cubase Lite but I don't like what I've seen so far (too much tinkering with things I don't need/care about just to do the basics - much like CoolEdit was).

From the intent that's clear from the way they describe it, this looks like it might be a winner :) Shame I won't have time to play with it for ages

I have now done som audio track recording tests with Reaper 0.999.

The VST handling in Reaper is excellent. Easy to "connect" plug-ins on tracks (pre, and post recording and pre or post fader) and you see the "instrument panel" of the plug-in with all function buttons etc.
And Reaper has a very good "library" function to show all VST(I)and DX(I) plug-ins that it finds on PC harddisk

In many ways it has a better user interface and better functions than KAE, but I am starting to suspect that Reaper is eating more CPU power than KAE ( Kristal Audio Engine) and I have seen tendences of track to track latency/delay problems even on a 4 track recording ( no problem with that in KAE). I am using the Asio4All ASIO 2 driver.
More recording tests shows that it is possible to reduce the latency to negliable level by changing latency parameters in Asio4All and/or use 96 kHz sampling frequency.

And this is with my cheapo Soundblaster Live! 24 bit soundcard.
