saw the mxr, zakk wylde overdrive pedal, and was wondering what it did and if anyone has used one, and what they thought of it?

Overdrive pedals simulate the sound of overdriven tubes or as Forrok Star would put it; "Tubes driven to their saturation point". :P
At any rate what you should expect is a mild to medium distortion. If you are going to spend the money, save up for a really decent tube overdrive like the Tonebone. Don't buy something because it has a name attached to it. You're likely to be dissappointed.

hueseph,
will this pedal make my solid state crate amp sound like a tube amp?

The ZW? I doubt it. A decent tube overdrive will add some nice tube warmth tho.

Which Crate is it? You may not get the full use out of a good overdrive pedal without investing in a better amp. It's a little hard to tell without going to the store and comparing.

I bought a Boss SD-1 to use with my SS Roland Microcube. I like the SD-1 distortion better than the amp distortion. But its still a solid state Microcube. So dont expect any wonders.

Well, I'd try the , Tonebone
Damage Control and the Vox Cooltron series
I may have forgotten some.
Crate solid states aren't my favourite, but you should hear some improvement, and the pedals should work well if you buy another amp at some point.
