Greetings.

I play a squire strat (quite badly) through a Fender Super Reverb. I love the sound (especially the reverb), but this amp is way too big to carry around. What would be the best portable (under 50lbs?) that would give me a similar sound. I'd like to keep it under $400.

I was looking at these, but I haven't played through any of them yet.

How close to the Super Reverb sound do you think I can get with a solid state amp?

Any input is appreciated.

Well, three things:

1) Both are, in my humble opinion, easily worth their money.
2) Both amps are wildly different kinds of amplifiers.
3) Neither of these amps is really solidstate.

The Blues Junior is about the best known small all-tube amp. Great clean and slightly overdriven sounds, no hard distortion. Its a mere 15W, so you can get quite far with it at home, and it is still usable at small gigs/band practice.

The Vox is a hybrid amp, having a digital pre-amp with a 1W tube poweramp, and a second, 30W solidstate, poweramp. It is much more versatile, but it is hard to say if it will get closer to the Super Reverb. If *I* had to chose, based on *my* preferences, it would be the vox. But in this case, just try them both, and go with what sounds best to you.

To name a few common all tube amps, including a few boutique amps. What sound and tone are you looking for?
Ampeg
Dr. Z
Crate
Epiphone
Gibson

Maven Peal
Marshall
Matchless

Peavey
Rivera
THD Univalve

Thanks for the feedback.

To be more specific, I want to have a good clean sound, so maybe the Blues Junior is not for me, and I don't need alot of power.

Are there any other (small, relatively cheap) amps I should look at that would give me something close to a Super Reverb sound?

I will, of course, play through some before I buy. I just want to make sure I'm looking at the right models (I'm also 100 miles from the nearest music store so I want to make sure I have a plan before I make the trip).

Thanks again!

Not sure if it will have your sound, but give a listen to the Roland Microcube. It's a lot of sound for the size and can run off 6 AA batteries.
Here's a link to reviews. http://harmony-central.com/Guitar/Data/Roland/MicroCube_Combo-01.html
