"Direct Injection" or "Direct Input" box; basically it converts your unbalanced, high-impedance instrument-level (from a guitar, keys, bass) or line-level signal (from an amp's "line out") to a balanced, low-impedance mic-level signal for sending to a mixer, PA, or recording device.

How do they work? A combination of resistors and transformers ...
