Probably about like Chicago :P I hate driving in a major city also
Umm, no, Boston is special. Chicago and NYC have insane amounts of traffic, but Boston raises confusion to an art form. Plus they have these traffic circles that you can only get into, you can't get out.
Still, LA takes the cake for having 70mph traffic jams. 8)
Our best wishes through all of this.
Laz
PS: You might look into the train from Albany or Pittsfield. It's more expensive than driving, but it's saner too.
Boston's not a great city to drive in. Not a great city to walk in either, because they're just liable to drive up on the sidewalks, too.
Great to hear Shaun's making progress!

Hello,
Shaun continues to do well but we do not know yet just
how long Rehab will take. His being in Boston is a mixed
blessing. The Rehab is one of the best and he has the
resources of Massachusetts General Hospital at his
disposal right next door. We can't get to see him as often
as when he was in Albany but that also means we can
take care of things on this side better.
The driving is still bad but once we refamiliarized
ourselves with the route it's in and out and we spend
very little time actually driving in the city.
Thank You All
John
Sorry, I've been off GN for an extended period of time, so just catching up with this thread. I was horrified to hear what happened and glad that your little guy is making good recovery. The entire LazClan sends it's best to you and yours. Kids do make amazing recoveries, and as Arjen wrote back on the 15th "For what little it's worth, the brains of young kids still have part of their ability to form new connections and re-grow damaged areas, a set of skills the brains rely on in the very beginning to develop their brains." Very, very true.
It sounds like he is in the very best of hands: The US News and World report listed Spaulding as the Best Rehab in New England in 2005. That's no small feat, and 6th in the nation overall. Of a note, # 1 is the Rehab Institute in Chicago. http://www.usnews.com/usnews/health/best-hospitals/rankings/specrepreha.htm
The driving sounds a little more bearable; it's amazing how you find your way around to avoid the major traffic areas. Going off peak travel times is a help too.
KUDOs to all the amazing GN folk who have given blood. It really does help. I send up a silent thank you to all the donors every time I use a unit on one of my patients.
Wish your little guy a Happy Halloween from the gang here.
Best always.
Laura,
Thank You
We are very aware of Spaulding's reputation my brother
(stroke survivor) and my daughter (burn survivor) both
went though rehab there. They both give them very high
grades.
Did you read all 107 post? WOW
Shaun is doing well but I haven't seen him yet this week
and can't wait until the weekend. The tutor for the school
system called yesterday and is preparing some work for
him so he can try to keep up.
It's a shame that now that Shaun is alert and active he has
to be so far away but he is in the best place for him.
John
So glad the news continues to get better.....
Enjoy your visit this weekend, I'm sure you'll keep us all up-dated as soon as you've seen Shaun....

Of course I read all 107 posts!! You're one of the family here, both at GN and Riverside Jam! I'm so sorry that you've had to be at Spaulding before. But as you said, you know what they can do. I'm glad Shaun is recovering well. If there is anything us locals can do (games, toys, DVDs) to bring him/send him there, please let us know. Any time. If he'd like a guitar.... Nick has some strings for him!
It's a long road for him, but he sounds well on his way. Please continue to update us; we're all pulling for him.
Best always,
Laura
Glad to hear Shaun is doing well, prayers and good wishes for his continued recovery, you sound to have a good community network. Sorry didn't write sooner, just after I read about the accident from David H in the GN news my mum got critically ill, I couldn't think straight for a while, but she's also on the mend now, thankfully. Prayers and thoughts really do help,
kind regards, Allison
Hello
It's been a little while since I've updated but I haven't
seen Shaun much until last night. He is doing fantastic!
He needed surgery to adjust the rods in his leg last
week and can now bend his leg and in starting to put
some weight on it. He also had an molded piece in
his mouth removed so his speech is closer to normal.
He still has some issues, and will for a long time, but
the goal is to have him home by Thanksgiving and back
in school after Christmas. His emotions run a little high
at times, but we are told this is normal after this type of
brain trauma.
He has made friends with an Iraqi boy age 12 who was
injured because of the war. We don't know the whole story
but he also has a broken leg. To see these two boys with
very little in common( except their injuries) laughing and chasing
each other in their wheelchairs is quite the sight.
Shaun is getting Tutoring ,PT, OT and taking part in other
programs available to him. There will be no stopping him
now he is very determined to get better.
When he was visiting with he cousin Zack last night
Zack said he didn't know what it was like to have a broken
bone. Shaun's responds was " You will when I get out of
this wheelchair"
Now I don't condone violence but if it gives him something to
look forward to then maybe it's not that bad. Besides these
boys are more than cousins they are also best friends. I don't
think he really intends to break his leg. Time will tell.
I must admit when the Doctors told us that Shaun's initial
recovery would take weeks I thought they where being
optimistic. Now here it is 4 1/2 "weeks" later and I am
amazed at the progress. The care that Shaun has received
has been some of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen too much)
The support from the community has been wonderful. I can
hardly leave my house without one or more of the neighbors
stopping to ask about Shaun.
Some of the local bands are putting together a benefit
for Shaun on Nov 27 and it is looking like he will be able to
attend. Even if he does not reach his goal of being home by
then he will be well enough for a weekend visit.
Thank you all again for all your prayers and support.
This has been a very trying time but we can now see
that light at the other end and it looks pretty good.
I have a saying that gets me through times like these
that I got from a good friend of mine named Ian.

LMAO! Yeah, he's just joking and it shows that HE knows it is going to get better because he said, "when I get out of this wheelchair". That in it self proves he knows everything is going to be alright.
Glad to hear things are going good.
COOL on the benifit concert!!! You folks have some GREAT people around you that care a lot! I'm REALLY happy to hear that!
Take care, bud!
Mike
I agree with Tracker.. If hes planning his future then hes pretty dang optimistic. hehe.. I am so happy for him and I cant believe the progress. I remember the day you told us, I really (from here in my chair of course) know how well he would do but it sounds terrific.
As for him and the Iraqi boy... Thats the wonderful thing about kids. They dont care about race, nationality, politics, and so forth... they just wanna have fun and thats wonderful..
Still be praying for him
