Well, I try not to go around bragging about my kids' accomplishments too much, but this one is music-related, so I will.

My daughter (high school senior this fall) is the drum major for her school's marching band. For those who may not know, the drum major is the conductor of the marching band. For bands that participate in competitions such as hers does, the drum major's role is cultivated into a veritable art form and they are challenged with rapidly changing time signatures, etc. (BTW, our school district was rated by a music educators' professional association as being one of the top 100 districts in the US for music education a year or two ago. It's a smaller public school district, but music education has remained a priority here and the students enjoy some fantastic opportunities.)

So back to the daughter, she attended marching band camp at a nearby university and last night we attended the camp's demonstrations of what the students had been working on. During the awards presentation my daughter received the Outstanding Achievement award among all the drum majors in attendance. She had been recognized for Best Technique twice during camp, as well. So she got a nice trophy but even better she is now eligible to apply for a specific scholarship awarded by the camp organization. Of course the application process involves writing answers to seven or eight essay questions so if she will follow through on that remains to be seen.

You have every reason to be proud of your daughter, so why not brag? Well done her!

One little thing - translation please, for us non-Americans....

"high school senior this fall"....I know fall is autumn, but high school senior? How old does that make her? Another thing I've never quite got is the US school system - "I've known him since third grade...." - how does that work?

:D :D :D

There are 12 grades (levels) that have to be passed in order to graduate high school. First graders start at age 6 (of course, there's pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, but those don't count!!), so most graduates are around 18 when they finish.

High school begins at grade 9. Your first year in high school you are a freshman. Second year a sophomore, third year a junior and fourth year you're a senior! Then, you're either off to college or the workforce!
