Here's an interesting article about what it takes to make the RnR Hall of Fame.
[T]he Rock Hall's future [is] as sketchy as a Detroit Avenue hooker on meth. The Hall's website claims that one of its goals is "to recognize the contributions of those who have had a significant impact on the evolution, development, and perpetuation of rock and roll." But how will it measure that? By record sales? Innovation? Will there be quotas for gender and race, as well as genres like hip-hop and techno? Or is it just one big popularity contest?
Scene called and asked, but Rock Hall spokeswoman Margaret Thresher didn't have a response. "Good question," she said.
The answer is that without a concrete definition of rock, there is no science to make the induction process flawless. Outside of Nirvana, the next decade doesn't boast many safe picks. Even Madonna will be a controversial inductee, seeing as the pop diva never released a rock record in her entire career.
Then there are the guys who sold out arenas, only to end up on the cheesy VH1 rock docs -- the Poisons and New Kids on the Blocks of the world. No one would claim they were innovative or had any staying power (NKOTB didn't even rawk!). But they defined musical eras and sold gobs 'n' gobs of records (even though they now make up 90 percent of the stock at the Record Exchange).
How will this shadowy induction committee weigh those guys against, say, the Replacements and Dinosaur Jr. -- artists that aren't household names and never graced the cover of Rolling Stone, but created whole new genres and birthed hundreds of new bands?
"It's all about stickin it to the man!"
It's a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll!
Britney Spears sold alot of records too!
We know you are a huge fan of Britney Spears...but that won't be enough for her rock and roll hall of fame induction. You need more support.
I would say she should be inducted as early as possible along with Boney M, Milli Vanili and Backstreet Boys in Rock and Roll 'hall of guilty pleasures'.
Rahul, You mean the Rock-In-Roll "Hall of shame" don't you?

gnease,
Pop production influence?
Production as in studio production: Abba had a pretty distinct and lush studio sound characterized by the mixing of the tight vocal harmonies, instrumentation and FX processing. They may not have originated it, but certainly made it their own, creating an identifiable sonic signature much as did Phil Spector did with his "Wall of Sound."

What about KISS? Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ........ Were they famous? Are they famous? Think so. Don't care if you like / approve of their music. They were a major influence on rock. They made a lot of really good bands pick up the guitar and play. They had incredible longevity. They defined a generation in the 70's. How do you spell SNUB? There are one hit wonders in the R&R Hall of Fame!
Oh PS ... Patti Smith? Anyone know her? Patti Smith ... KISS ... hmmmm. Oh well, how about her former boyfriends band? If you can tell me who that is, I'll tell you why they should be in the RR HOF as well!!!
"Work hard, rock hard, eat hard, sleep hard,
grow big, wear glasses if you need 'em."

I'll give you the X boyfriend's name .. Alan Lanier ..... and song colaborators Albert and Joe Bouchard. No Hall of Fame for them? Hmmm.......

"If the moon were made of ribs, would you eat it?"
Everytime I hear the Patti Smith vocal on "The Revenge of Vera Gemini" I think ....... She's in the R&R Hall of Fame, but I can't really even think of any songs she did. I just know her from the writing credits and backup vocals on some of the BOC songs. This R&R Hall of Fame puzzles me. :?

Where were you in the late 70s, early 80s? That was prime time for her band. Kinda hard to have missed her on the rock and alt scene given her Because the Night cover and Frederick, tho Redondo Beach was the fave of mine.
heh .... dhodge and i use to play Godzilla occasionally. might have to do that again.

You know, "how many Hits" an artist has is not necessarily the only criteria for the Hall of fame. My pick for this year would be The Seeds  They only had one or two hits,(Pushin to Hard) but they set the stage for later punk rockers IMHO

Being seminal and being popular are definitely two different things. Unfortunately, we reward popularity more often. I think Patti Smith is/was more original than BOC -- but that's just me.
RE The Seeds: Agree, and I feel the same about ? and the Mysterions (96 Tears), and the Zombies Of course, the Zombies probably already are in the RnRHoF.

This is a real blast from the past. The Seeds did a guest appearance here. I remember watching this show when it aired. The show was called "The Mother's in Law"
We had just got our first Color TV set
Amazing find! The Seeds on the Mothers in Law -- they must have been connected to a writer or producer in some way.
(Ballard and Arden look young there -- I remember thinking of them as old and crazy.)
